So some of you out there are probably all ecstatic about the new Eragon book out there, Brisngr. I too was interested since a read the books when they first came out. A read a chapter out of the book while at the store deciding whether or not to buy it, when I remembered some things I'd thought of from the first books.
The plot line of Eragon follows the plot line of Star Wars, and has taken ideas from Lord of the Rings.
How? Let me show you. If you haven’t read the books, or seen the Star Wars movies, I’m afraid I can’t explain everything so this might confuse some of you.
Ok, so the Star Wars a New Hope starts out with Princess Leia being captured by Vader for a valuable item she had. The Death Star Plans. She stored them in one of her droids and sent it to the planet surface.
Eragon starts out with Ayra transporting being captured by Shade for, what do you know, a valuable item. A Dragon egg. Ayra transports the egg away with a spell.
Star Wars: Teenage farm boy (Luke) finds droid and finds a hidden message in it.
Eragon: Teenage farm boy (Eragon) finds Dragon egg and it hatches.
Star Wars: Talks to an old hermit about the message, Hermit (Ben) tells him about
the old times and the Jedi. Gives him a light saber and says it was his father's.
Eragon: Talks to an old hermit about the Dragon, Hermit (Brom) tells him about the old times and the Dragon Riders. Gives him a sword and tells him it was his father's.
Star Wars: Goes home, house is destroyed; Ben tells him he should go to the Rebels.
Eragon: Goes home, house is destroyed; Brom tells him he should go to the Varden.
Star Wars: Learns about the force, and rescues Leia from the death star.
Eragon: Learns about the ancient magic, rescues Arya from Gil'ead.
Star Wars: Ben tells Luke he was a Jedi, and had taught his father, and then died.
Eragon: Brom tells Eragon he was a Dragon Rider, and had taught his father, and then died.
Star Wars: Luke makes it to the rebels; tells them the Empire is about to attack, and he is praised for bringing back Leia.
Eragon: Eragon makes it to the Varden; tells them the Empire is about to attack, and he is praised for bringing back Arya.
Star Wars: Big Fight at the Rebel base between the Rebels and the Empire.
Eragon: Big Fight at the Varden base between the Varden and the Empire.
Star Wars: Rebels win.
Eragon: Varden wins.
Star Wars: Next movie. The Rebels move their base and Luke goes off to train with master Yoda.
Eragon: Book two. Varden moves their base and Eragon goes off to train with Oromis.
Star Wars: Luke leaves Yoda promising he’ll come back.
Eragon leaves Oromis promising he’ll come back.
This is basically where Eragon let off leaving Brisngr to continue with this unoriginal plot line. There’s a few things I’ll now list that will further connect Eragon to Star Wars, and a couple of things from Lord of the Rings. This is just my perception; let me know if you think otherwise.
Luke Skywalker - Eragon
Ben Kenobi - Brom
Princess Leia - Arya
Darth Vader-(In the first one I’d say Shade, but in the second I’d say) Murtagh.
Darth Sideous-Galbatorix
Jedi-Dragon Riders
The Force-The Ancient Language
Rebels-The Varden
The Empire-The Empire (The idiot didn’t bother changing that one!)
Uncle Owen-Uncle Garrow
The Tower of Mordor-(I thought this was) Helgrind
Yoda-Oromis
Light Saber-Elf Sword
Ring Wraiths-The Ra’zac
There's even something from Marvel, The Hand (A gang Wolverine was in)-The Black Hand
That’s about it. Another thing is Paolini stole Tolken’s elf language.
So, how do you like Eragon now?

I've never read the books. I tried reading the first chapter and immediately fell asleep because it was so boring. The only reason I know how eragon goes is because i've, sadly, played the PS2 game but i can see your connections even though i didn't see them before. it's amazing how much people copy these days. take avril lavigne: her whole "best damn thing" album is almost completely plagerized. think about it. Her song "keep holding on" is almost like "welcome to the black parade" by my chemical romance, her song "girlfriend" is almost exactly like "hey mickey" by toni basil, and others. go to youtube and type in "best damn plagerism" and you'll see what i'm talking about. it's crazy.
I absolutely agree with you Alex. However, here are some corrections:
Ring Wraiths-Ra'zac
Just so you know, the screeching things I believe are called Nazgul.
And also, in the first movie the fight is at the Death Star, which is not the Rebel base.
Not to be rude, but just to help.
YOU ARE A PIECE OF CRAP! Eragon is in the past. Star wars is the future. I think Eragon is a way original idea and very cool. If you think it is the same story line, read book 3.
Justin! That doesn't matter. The plot line is the same. The same events happen. The same charcters are portayed! If I wrote a book about A midget in the future having to journey to a faraway volcano to destroy a ring, it's still a Lord of the Rings plot.
you are an evil satanic person to try to ruin my love of the eragan books! And from now on me and marie are going to call you sterling.
Blake, like I told Marie, take it from an educated writers perspective (which you might not understand). It's like Americans trying to copy Anime.
Cool. Because I'm Handsome and Elusive.
Michael, the Nazgul and the Ringwraiths are the same thing, just two different titles. Alex, you should know by now that writers are notorious for stealing ideas and making them their own; besides the author was fifteen years old when he wrote Eragon, give him a break.
Isaac, the fact that he dared copy and publish such things! He's like the nerd who wanted to see how Star Wars would turn out in a Lord of the Rings setting.
And... there's something wrong with that? I agree, IF that is what he did, it should have been posted on the internet instead of on paper so that people would have to pay for it. (I would again like to emphasize my use of the word IF.) Putting storylines into a different time frame is a good way to exercise your creativity. (WAIT. Come to think of it, didn't Justin say that Star Wars was "futuristic"? Did he not pay any attention to the introduction that is consistent throughout every installment of the series? "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." I digress.)
But we live in America, and we're capitalists. We can write about whatever we want, we can sell whatever we want (except drugs), and we can complain about whatever we want, and the government can't do a thing about it. My suggestion is to take a Taoist approach and stop complaining so much. Life will suddenly seem more enjoyable.
Although I'm interested to hear you explain the Star Wars/Eragon parallel for the dragons, which are KIND OF central to the storyline.
Levi, we can't neccasarily sell whatever we want. That's why there's copyright laws and royalties. And also, is it really that impressive for someone to takes someones idea, and copy it while adding a few things to make it look different?
I'm not complaining I'm just irritated as a writer that Paolini got away with this mockery so I'm letting everyone know about it. Also, you can't dent that he's a horrible writer.
The best parrallel I could come up with was mini chlorians (if that's how you spell it). Can't really explain it here, but if you want, just ask me anytime at school.
